If these questions are in your mind too, then this post is for you.
In this post, we are going to discuss all these things in detail.
In short, this post will help you make the right decision to buy a garment steamer or not.
So this post is is divided into three parts.
First we will talk about why garment steamers are better than regular iron?. What are the benefits of using them.
Then we will talk about different garment steamers available in the market so which one should you buy
Handheld garment steamer which easily costs around 3-4 thousand or upright steamers which cost around 6-7 thousand.
Here I will minutely compare their features And I’ll discuss their pros and cons with you.
So that you get a 360° view of every product and with complete information you can judge that which steamer will be the best for you.
And in the third part we’ll talk about important do’s and don’ts of using a garment steamer which you must know.
So keep reading this post till the end.
Also I want to assure you that this post is not sponsored by any brand.
I disclose brand with you just so you know exactly which model are we discussing.
So now let’s get started.
Firstly we are going to discuss the benefits of using a garment steamer and the biggest benefit is it’s versatile uses .
With this you can steam almost all fabrics.
Whether it’s heavy anarkalis, woolen polyester puffer jackets or sweaters, blazer, And some of our t-shirts have prints on them and while ironing them we have to put a handkerchief so that their print doesn’t get burnt.
But this issue is not with steamers.
You can directly steam them. So this way it becomes very convenient to use and it also saves you a lot of time.
Unlike regular iron, you don’t have to first bring an iron board, then you have to open it and after that you’ll do ironing on it. Nothing like that.
You just have to hang your cloth and steam it and you’re done.
Next thing it won’t burn your clothes So you don’t have to worry about that as well.
There is only one drawback of using steamers.
it’s difficult to steam saree with it. Because obviously we can’t spread it properly.
But you can easily use it to give a fresh look to your saree.
Also when we get our clothes from outside then fold crease forms in front of them which doesn’t look good so by using steamers you can quickly remove them.
In all I feel that garment steamer makes us completely independent where we can quickly steam all our clothes as per our convenience.
So now that we are aware of the benefits of using garment steamers. we’re now going to talk about which garment steamer should you buy,
Firstly, I would like to say that whichever garment steamer you choose, make sure it’s power output is minimum 1500 W.
I have experienced that generally 1000-1200W steamer don’t give such good results.
That is why today we will compare handheld steamer from the brand Black and Decker.
you can buy it HERE
Then we have upright steamer from the brand Philips which is GC523.
Philips upright steamer GC523/60
Philips Easy Touch Plus Standing Garment Steamer GC523/60
Philips EasyTouch Plus Standing Garment Steamer GC523/60 – 1600 Watt, 5 Steam Settings, Up to 32 g/min steam, with Double Pole
So first we will do their feature comparison in detail.
And after that I’ll share their pros and cons with you.
Generally it takes 3-4 minutes to iron denims.
But it didn’t even take me a minute to properly steam them with these steamers.
We all know how difficult it is to iron the kind of heavily embroidered suits at home.
But with a steamer it looks like a child’s play.
And now you don’t need to be dependent on anybody for steaming your woolens.
You can steam them on your own within seconds.
Similarly you can steam both your casual or formal shirts.
And yes! Now you can worry-free steam your delicate fabrics and delicate prints.
Performance wise I liked the results of both of them.
Now we are going to compare their features and based on them you’ll be able to decide that which garment steamer should you buy.
First comes the water tank.
With Philips you get a 1.6 L water tank. We can detach it.
and here at the bottom, we fill water through the hole.
On the other hand in Black and Decker you get a 260ml water tank
and at the bottom you can open the lid like this and add water.
which means that an upright steamer has a bigger water tank because of which we can steam 20-30 clothes in one go.
But a handheld steamer naturally has a smaller water tank with which you can steam only 5-7 clothes at one time.
In Philips you get 5 steam settings so that you can adjust the steam level according to the garment.
After turning it on, it takes less than 1 minute to get ready for use.
Its steam output is up to 32g/min.
In Black and Decker you get 2 steam settings. One is blue which is for thick fabrics like woolen garments
And green light is for less steam for delicate clothes.
And this too gets ready to use within 1 minute after turning on.
Black and Decker’s steam output is upto 21g/min.
Handheld steamers are travel friendly.
If you have go to different city to attend a function or if you travel a lot then you can easily carry them.
But upright steamers are of course not portable.
In fact this Philips steamer doesn’t even have wheels.
You literally have to drag it or lift it, which I think is a major flaw.
Coming to the next point, handheld steamer’s on and off button and its steam setting are in its handle just like a hair dryer.
But the Philips steamer doesn’t have a button in its handle.
So if you have to turn it on/off or you have to change steam settings, you have to bend every time.
Moving on to the third point,
when we use upright steamers then we only have its head in our hand which is very light and very comfortable to use.
But when we use handheld steamers then we have its whole body in our hand
including the water tank and the machine and everything which is why it becomes heavy and after some time our arm gets tired.
So you may have to take a break after you steam 2-3 clothes.

Final point is back support. Whenever we use an upright steamer then the garment gets the support which is same as the size of the board.
But when we use a handheld steamer, we hang the garment on some door for example
then the whole door becomes a back support for the garment.
Here I have made a comparison sheet of both the steamers regarding their features and pros and cons.
I hope this gives you a clear picture
Now let’s discuss their pros and cons.
INALSA Garment Steamer Speedy Steam – 1700 W

So now we have discussed features of both the steamers in detail. So which garment steamer is better for you?
See if we talk about the performance then I liked the results of both equally.
Its not like results of Philips were better than that of Black and Decker but there is huge price difference between them.
See if you have a limited budget and if you travel a lot and you don’t have a problem to carry a lot of weight
and if you can arrange a hook near a socket. And it can be a normal socket. You don’t need to have a power socket.
So if you can make this arrangement then go for a handheld steamer but make sure, like I told you, that its power output should be minimum 1500 W.
But if you don’t have a budget issue and you don’t have to move the garment steamer a lot then really go for upright steamers.
They are very convenient to use and they do save you a lot of time.
Not to forget, for changing their steam settings you have to bend So that’s one thing that you have to keep in mind.
So now I am sure that you are able to decide that which garment steamer is best for you

Now let’s move to the last part of the post where we will discuss some important do’s and don’ts of using any garment steamer.
Firstly don’t use regular tap water in any garment steamer because if there is a hard (High TDS) water supply in your area,
So due to high calcium deposits, the machine can break down and its life can also decrease.
You should always use purified water/RO water and this goes for steam iron as well, if you have one.
Secondly, we use garment steamers vertically. We never move them horizontally.
If we think of using it on an ironing pad then its a big no.
Thirdly, whenever you steam garments then don’t fold them immediately. Put them in a corner for 5-10 minutes.
and after that only you can wear them or store them.
because we just have steamed them and if it retains any moisture then it will dry out.
And finally the most important tip is to not mix anything with water in the water tank of your garment steamer.
like essential oil, fragrance or any fabric freshener. Don’t add any such thing unless specified by the company.
because our steamers our designed for water only and if we put any oil in that so definitely their functioning will get effected.
So keep all these things in mind.
So which you these garment steamers you liked the most, please let me know in the comments.
